Full Description

The complex of farm buildings at Rookery Farm were the subject of a photographic survey in 2009, prior to their proposed conversion to residential and holiday let use. The complex comprises two ranges of adjoining barns and a fragment of a demolished western range, all thought to date to the mid 19th century. Starting from the north-western corner of the site, the complex comprises a stable and hay barn (making up the northern range), and a cart shed and granary (making up the eastern range). The buildings are largely constructed of coursed local limestone blocks pointed with lime mortar, and feature red clay pantile roofs. Internal divisions and extensions to the buildings are built of brick, usually laid in an English Garden Wall bond, and many of the structures feature brick detailing and arching over their doors and openings. Like all of the structures in the complex, the fragment of the demolished western range shows many phases of work and alterations, though the building originally appears to have been built of the same local limestone blocks. No evidence could be identified to indicate its exact function. {1}
