Full Description

The complex of farm buildings at Fen Farm were the subject of a photographic survey in 2011, prior to their proposed conversion to a mixed use development site. The complex comprises a series of adjoining barns, cattle sheds and stables, which are thought to date to the early 19th century, possibly being constructed in 1813, when the adjacent Fen Farm cottages are thought to have been built. Many of the buildings have been altered and some have collapsed, though some of the original fabric can be discerned. Proceeding clockwise from the north-western corner, the complex comprises: 1. A single storey, brick-built barn with an intact pantile roof, laid on a king post trussed timber frame. The building features stable doors and an internal feeding trough, indicating it was used to house livestock. 2. A two-storey cart shed and hay barn, built of bricks laid in an English Garden Wall bond. The building features a red clay pantile roof, laid on a king post trussed timber frame. The building also features paired arched openings, a brick-built threshing floor and a timber hayloft above. 3. A single-storey barn, built of bricks laid in an English Garden Wall bond. The roof has been removed, though was likely of a similar pantile construction, given the visible ridgeline on the eastern gable of the adjoining structure. The building features brick arched feeding troughs and a brick floor with prominent drains, suggesting it was used to house livestock. 4. A single-storey, brick-built stables and feed store. The building appears to have been relatively recently rebuilt and although material appears to have been re-used, little of the original fabric and design can be determined. 5. A single-storey barn, built with a brick wall to the west and open sided to the east. The building features a pantile roof, though much of this has collapsed. 6. The remains of a small set of single-storey wooden sheds, in very poor condition and largely collapsed. {1} Fen Farm, Burton. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with multiple regular yards. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been significant loss (greater than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {2}
