Full Description

Evidence relating to the intial construction of Church Cottage was revealed in July 2013, during the archaeological monitoring of groundworks for the construction of new services and extensions to the building. Church Cottage is a mid 19th century house, built of brick with a slate roof. The exact date of its construction is unknown, although must be between 1838 and 1858, when maps made of the area show its appearance. It is possible that the construction of Church Cottage coincided with the re-building of the adjacent Church of St Helen, in 1847 (see PRN 47632). The archaeological monitoring revealed a simple deposit sequence across the site, comprising a modern topsoil overlying an imported buried soil deposit, on top of a natural subsoil horizon of sand. It was thought highly likely that the buried soil layer was imported onto the site as part of the landscaping process associated with the creation of the adjacent Biscathorpe Park (see PRN 47134). The buried soil layer was laid down to build up the ground level in this area, which in turn allowed the construction of Church Cottage. The monitoring also revealed the remains of substantial earlier stone rubble foundations, at the western end of the house. It remains unclear whether these also formed part of the ground-raising process, or formed part of an unknown, earlier structure on the site. {1}{2}
