Full Description

A former blacksmith's workshop at Haugham, known as The Old Smithy. It was the subject of historical research in 2014, when an assessment of its significance was produced. The building is constructed of smooth faced red brick laid in Old English Garden Wall bond, and features a pantile roof with terracotta ridge. The stylistic features and construction materials used in this building are very similar to several other structures in the village known to have been built around 1860 and likely designed by James Fowler of Louth. The Old Smithy forms part of a group of estate buildings built by the Chaplin family as Lords of Haugham Manor. The building has a simple rectangular plan form with no evidence of previous subdivision. Evidence of a former gable stack can be seen on the eastern gable, with a small opening through the wall indicating the location of the former forge. The principal elevation faces north and has two windows. A symmetrical arrangement would likely have been evident on the southern elevation, along with the main doorway opening, although considerable alterations have been made here, with two large openings now being present in this wall. A 20th century timber and corrugated lean-to structure has also been added to the west gable. Whilst the majority of the original blacksmith fittings have been removed, some of the iron hooks and tethering hoops are still attached to the interior walls. {1}
