Full Description

Three intercutting ditches were recorded along with a fourth ditch, located approximately 50m to the north-east, in May 2013, during the archaeological monitoring of the renewal of electricity cables at The Grange, South Kyme. Very few finds were recovered from these features and their dating therefore proved inconclusive. A fragment of possible Roman brick was found in the primary fill of the most recent ditch, although fragments of post-medieval brick were also recovered from the layer directly overlying, and it remains uncertain whether the Roman fragment was redeposited. It may be that some of the ditches equate to the creation of the post-medieval Parliamentary Enclosure field boundaries, as depicted on early Ordnance Survey maps of the area, although it may also be that some of the ditches are of much older origin. {1}{2}
