Full Description

A rectangular earthwork, probably medieval in date, consisting of a ditch 7 paces wide at the bottom and 5 feet deep, enclosing a platform 2 feet higher than the field level. Faint traces of foundations are perhaps discernible to the west of the enclosure. A row of houses has encroached on its edge, and the ditch at the north-east corner is nearly filled up. Scheduled as a 'secular earthwork'. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} There are amorphous indications of an occupation site on the west of this moated platform. Re-surveyed at 1:2500. {6}{7} A rectangular earthwork in a field hitherto respected by suburban building. Stukeley originated the idea that it was Roman, but it looks like a moated site, possibly of late medieval date. The area covered by the site is about an acre, about 90 by 45 yards, raised platform at the eastern end. Entrance apparently near west end of longer sides, and opposite one another. Ditch broad and deep on east and north sides very faint at west. Two ponds flank the southern entrance. No records of any excavation. The monument was formerly in Skirbeck Quarter parish before becoming part of Boston. Post-Conquest, part of the land in Skirbeck, located on the west bank of the River Witham and later known as Skirbeck Quarter, was held by Eudo, lord of Tattershall. All fence posts are excluded from the scheduling, althought the ground beneath them is included. {8}
