Description

Six trial trenches were excavated as part of an investigation of the Roman Town and Cemetery at Ancaster. The trenches were divided between two locations; three trenches in the settlement area east of the Roman Town (ANS01) and three trenches in the cemetery area west of the town (ANC01). The eastern trenches were sited above strong geophysical anomalies and artefact concentrations, and found settlement evidence in the form of building material, ditches and a possible road or causeway. The western trenches were sited above strong geophysical anomalies and found burials and evidence for industrial or mortuary activity. {1}{2}
