Evaluation excavations were carried out as part of the Fenland Management Project. A 20m grid was laid out over an area measuring 60m by 160m, taking in part of the island and adjacent marine deposits. One metre square test pits were dug at the south-west corner of each 20m square grid square, and an additional four test pits were dug in a line to the west and thirty-seven to the east, predominantly in a 120m by 40m transect. Where the alluvium was shallow/absent the test pits were hand-dug; elsewhere they were machine-dug. Where no alluvial cover was present a sample of modern ploughsoil was taken for sieving; a total of twenty samples were sieved at 2mm resolution. After quantification of lithics recovered, fourteen of the 1m test pits were extended to 5m square test stations. Of these, four were selected for further excavation in chequerboard fashion to gain insight into the spatial distribution of artefacts within the paleosol. Six other test stations on the island were also extended to 5m. As Test Station 5 contained a sub-oval pit, a 1.5m width of topsoil was excavated circa 25m to the south to determine if this possible grave was surrounded by a ring ditch. Samples for phosphate analysis were taken from each 1m test pit, from the paleosol and from the base of the topsoil on the islands.{1}
