Description

An east to west aligned trench, originally excavated in 1983, was re-opened in an attempt to clarify its recorded stratigraphy, and determine whether it had been cut into foundation material for the West Gate of Lincoln Castle. Re-examination confirmed that the original trench had indeed been cut into the West Gate foundations by c.0.4m, under the misconception that the layer was natural limestone brash, and more substantial foundations for the West Gate were revealed. {1}{2}
