Description

Trial trenching was carried out prior to construction of five multi-storey student residences. Eight trenches were excavated: Trenches 1 and 2 measured 2.5m by 1m, Trenches 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 measured 2m by 1m. Dimensions for Trench 8 were not provided. Hand augering was also carried out from a depth of 1.2m downwards for circa 2.8m in order to secure environmental samples. Trench 2 flooded upon augering, preventing sampling from taking place. Trenches 6 and 7 were obstructed by stone within a few centimetres of the base of the trench, preventing sampling from taking place. No archaeological finds or features were recorded.{1}
