Description

A single trial trench measuring 2m X 3m was excavated to examine ground next to the retaining wall. This was done to determine the depth and nature of the retaining wall foundations, and establish if the stonework found previously belongs to the Roman wall. Also to allow an appropiate mitigation strategy to be considered prior to any potential development of the site. A test pit was excavated immediately behing the wall to establish the level of indisturbed deposits, it was excavated to a depth of 1.5m and then augered to a depth of 3m. No evidence for stonework behind the existing retaining wall was recorded, nor were there any Roman deposits. {1}{2}
