Description

Trial trenching was carried out in preparation for Phase 2 of extension work, after a dense area of briquetage was discovered. Three trenches, located in the area of the proposed aeration lanes, and a 10m by 10m evaluatory area, located at the centre of Final Settlement Tank 1, were excavated. Trench 1 measured 45m by 2m; Trench 2 was unexcavated; Trench 3 measured 30m by 2m. Trench 2 was left unexcavated, as no peat was discovered in the western half of the evaluation area. The evaluation hoped to determine the extent and nature of any remains, and the quality of any environmental sampling undertaken.{1}
