Description

An evaluation, in the form of trial trenching, was carried out prior to construction of 24 residential buildings on the western part of the site (Area A). The eastern part of the site (Area B) lies within the South Witham Flood Protection Area and will not be developed. The evaluation considered a 2% sample of the site, to investigate features identified by a prior geophysical survey, and apparently blank areas. Four trenches measured 20m by 1.6m, and six trenches measured 10m by 1.6m. Trenches 1-6 were located in Area A, while Trenches 7-10 were located in Area B. Trench 2 was relocated 5m to the north of its original location, due to rising water levels possibly caused by an underground springline.{1}
