Description

Ten trial trenches were excavated on land at Church Hill, Washingborough, in advance of proposed residential development. The linear earthwork mound noted during the previous site visit (see ELI14719) had been removed by machine prior to the start of the trenching process, without the presence of an archaeologist. The remains of a substantial lime kiln, at least 5m in diameter and more than 1m deep, was encountered. No surviving stone structure was discovered during its excavation, though significant lime residue and heat affected stones were noted within the body of the kiln. Though no dating evidence was recovered, the construction is typical of a pre-industrial temporary 'clamp kiln'. One Medieval and three undated ditches were also excavated, as was a sub-oval feature containing clinker and a post-Medieval pipe stem. {1}{2}
