Description
An archaeological excavation was conducted on land to the north of Gonerby Lane, Gonerby Moor, prior to the proposed construction of a new solar farm. This followed previous geophysical survey (ELI14606) and trial trenching (ELI14644) on the same site, which established the presence of a Roman settlement. Two discrete areas were excavated. Evidence of demolished limestone buildings was encountered in the southern area, including possible construction trenches and the remains of limestone footings. Waste pits to the east of the structural remains, revealed in both excavation areas, contained spelt and bread wheat seeds as well as barley, cabbage and vetch (pea) seeds in quantities commensurate with domestic food production. Small quantities of iron slag suggest metalworking in the vicinity. The pottery recovered is typical of a rural settlement of 2nd to 3rd century AD date, with only a few imported wares present. {1}{2}
