Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording of the excavation of pole holes was conducted on land at Boston Road, Wainfleet St Mary, within the bounds of the scheduled Medieval salt workings (DLI1587, 1004930). A series of dumped silt deposits were recorded. Although no datable finds were recovered, these are thought to be waste deposits resulting from the salt-making process in the 15th-16th centuries. Part of a modern brick wall was also encountered in the central pole hole. This appears to be the remains of a 20th century northeast-southwest aligned wall within a 1m deep foundation cut, and indicates previously unknown modern disturbance within the scheduled area. {1}{2}
