Description

Nine trial trenches were excavated on land at Manning Road, Bourne, to inform proposed development. A large feature was encountered at the west of the site, along the estimated line of the Roman Car Dyke. An augur survey and sondages were made in order to assertain the origin of this feature; though it is possible that this represents a length of the Roman canal, it was considered more likely to be the result of quarrying for a railway embankment that once ran along the western edge of the site. This formed an area of marshy ground which since silted up. A gully of Roman date and two undated ditches were encountered to the south and east of this feature respectively. {1}{2}
