Description

Three trial trenches excavated on land at Littlebourne Lane, Marton, to determine the extent of known Roman remains in the area and to inform any future development of the site. A spread of Roman material and two ditches were encountered, from which a small assemblage of Roman pottery was recovered including two near-complete Samian ware bowls. Several intact and well-preserved pieces of wood were encountered in a peat deposit underlying the archaeology, which were deemed to be unworked and of natural origin. The archaeological horizon was sealed by a post-Medieval 'warping' layer of silts, deposited through the intentional flooding of land to improve agricultural yields and prevent seasonal flooding. {1} This evaluation followed a previous programme of trenching in 2017 (see ELI14116) immediately to the south.
