Description

A magnetic gradiometer survey was conducted to inform proposed development on land at Pride Parkway, Sleaford. A series of linear anomalies were identified in the southern half of the west field. Most of these were rectilinear in form, suggesting a probable Roman date. A broad area of high readings in the same area strongly suggests the presence of building rubble or the remains of foundations. It was supposed that these readings may have obscured other features in the same location. Survey of the east field revealed a small number of isolated positive anomalies, which may represent small pit features. {1}{2} Subsequent trial trenching (see ELI14027) revealed a significant Roman occupation layer in the southwest corner of the site, including wall foundations and rectilinear enclosures. Some, though not all, of these linear features matched those identified during the geophysical survey.
