Description
Ten trial trenches were excavated prior to the construction of a new residential development on land north of Church Walk, Sibsey. A series of intercutting Medieval features representing the remains of roadside settlement was encountered. Features including post holes, ditches, and a probable occupation layer were identified between the road and a north-northwest to south-southeast aligned boundary ditch likely demarcating the rear of the tofts. A significant quantity of Medieval pottery and animal bone typical of domestic waste was recovered from these features. Saxo-Norman pottery was also discovered within some features that also contained late medieval Toynton and Toynton Type II wares. This in the nearby presence of a settlement in the 9th-10th centuries, though no features on this site were positively dated as Saxo-Norman. Several post-Medieval features were also identified, including a small quarry or extraction pit and a large east-west aligned boundary ditch. {1}{2}
This survey confirmed the presence of Medieval ridge and furrow picked up on geophysical survey in early 2017 (see ELI14001). The dense roadside settlement remains were also identified during this survey.
