Description

A geophysical survey by magnetometry was undertaken prior to the construction of a new residential development on land north of Church Walk, Sibsey. East-west aligned ridge and furrow was identified across the site, and a stronger signal with the same alignment was interpreted as a field boundary ditch. In the southwest corner of the site was a dense concentration of linear and discrete anomalies between the road and a north-northwest to south-southeast aligned boundary ditch. These features were interpreted as possible tofts and related features associated with the Medieval street frontage. {1} A subsequent programme of trial trenching confirmed the presence of ridge and furrow across the site, and also confirmed the roadside features as Saxo-Norman to early post-Medieval settlement remains (see ELI14002).
