Description
A historic building survey was undertaken on the farmhouse at 28 Broad Gate, Weston Hills, prior to its proposed demolition and replacement with a new dwelling and garages. The building likely dates to the late 18th century, and was originally built as a single, gabled, thatched dwelling of two main rooms with garrets at the front lit by dormer windows. The catslide extension to the rear may have been built at the same time or may have a later date, though there appears to be no join between the two gables. At some time since then, the roof level of this outshot has been raised to provide more space in the first floor rooms. The northern gable has an integral brick chimney stack, and the south gable has a projecting stack that may be a later addition. The 1st and 2nd edition OS maps show the building separated into two dwellings, north and south. It has since been recombined to form a single dwelling, and two single storey lean-to extensions have been added to the gable ends. Internally, the ground floor consisted of a dining room, kitchen, lounge, and bathroom, and the first floor consisted of four bedrooms. The fixtures and fittings are typical of a mid-20th century farmhouse, and are in a generally poor condition indicative of the building's lack of occupation in recent years. {1}{2}
