Description

A historic building survey was undertaken prior to the conversion of farm buildings at Kettleby House to three dwellings. The surveyed buildings formed an E-shape plan around two south-facing crewyards. Four phases of construction were identified. In the first phase, likely dating to the construction of nearby Kettleby House in 1796, comprised a barn and shed. The second phase, dating to the early 19th century, comprised: a barn or garage and pigsties or animal shelters in the West Range; open sheds and possible former cart sheds in the Northwest Range; stables, chicken sheds and a fodder preparation house with a granary above in the Central Range. Phase three, dating to no earlier than 1878, comprised the Northeast and East Range cattle sheds. In the 20th century a fourth phase of construction saw the partial covering of the crewyards. The buildings are constructed of red brick in English Bond, with the exception of the first phase barn and shed, which are built in yellow brick in English Garden Wall Bond. The roofs are gabled, with hips at the northeast and northwest corners of the ranges. {1}{2}
