Description

Seven test pits were excavated as part of a community archaeological investigation of a field in the north-east of Ancaster, known as Kiln Field. The test pits were targeted to investigate a number of geophysical anomalies recorded by prior magnetometry and earth resistance surveys (see ELI12865-6). Traces of former Roman roadside settlement and probable industrial activity were confirmed, with the remains of demolished buildings or walls being recorded, fronting on to the adjacent Ermine Street. An unstratifed assemblage of largely Roman pottery and coins was recovered, along with a small quantity of medieval pottery. {1}
