Description

A fluxgate gradiometer survey was conducted as part of a community archaeological investigation of a field in the north-east of Ancaster, known as Kiln Field. A clearly defined area of magnetic enhancement was visible adjacent to Ermine Street, and was thought to represent the remains of Roman roadside settlement and industrial activity, linked by a number of associated tracks, roads and ditches. A further group of highly magnetic anomalies, located to the immediate east of the settlement area, were thought to represent the remains of possible kilns or hearths, supporting the likely industrial nature of the remains in this location. {1} Subsequent test pitting in this area confirmed the presence of the remains of former Roman roadside buildings and structures, fronting on to the adjacent Ermine Street (see ELI12867).
