Description

Eight trial trenches were excavated to inform proposed residential development on land off Prebend Lane, Welton. The trenches were targeted to investigate geophysical anomalies recorded by a prior magnetometry survey (see ELI12295), most of which were proven to be of natural origin. The trenching did confirm the suspected ditched enclosure previously identified at the southern edge of the site, and recorded a number of associated pit and ditch features, along with a potential cremation burial or hearth. Pottery recovered from these features was dated to the 1st century AD, confirming the suspected late Iron Age or early Roman date for this activity. {1}{2}
