Description

TF 19 SW NORMANBY-LE-WOLD CHURCH LANE (west side) 6/11 Church of St. St. Peter 1.11.66 II* Parish church. Early C13, early C14, restored 1868 by James Fowler. Coursed ironstone rubble, ironstone ashlar, slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles. West tower, nave with north and south ailes, north porch, rectangular chancel, north vestry. First 3 stages of west tower early C13, upperstage, early C14. Plinth runs round 3 sides. Squat clasping buttresses on north west and south west corners reaching up to top of first stage. North east and south east early C13 buttresses partially visible. West front, first stage, has single pointed light with stringcourse with rectangular profile running round above. Second stage, south side, has narrow rectangular light. Stringcourse with rectangular profile divides second and third stage. Third stage, west, north and south sides each have twin, narrow pointed openings each divided by weathered, polygonal support set far back. Early C14, fourth stage has moulded stringcourse running under bellopenings on all 4 sides. Each bellopening being a pointed arch divided by 2 cusped ogee headed lights with quatrefoil, all with hoodmoulds. West and south bellopenings much restored, north and east bellopenings, partially restored. Moulded eaves above, with projecting corner gargoyles, battlements and ornate corner pinnacles. North aisle mostly C19. West side of north aisle has single plain C19 lancet. Angle buttresses of 2 stages. Coped gable above with moulded terminations. C19 north porch has plinth and angle buttresses projecting, pointed north doorway with chamfered jambs, moulded arch, hoodmould with foliated label stops and corbel head above door. Coped gable above with ornate terminations and finial. Early C14 interior north door with double chamfered arch and jambs, heavily restored inner order and hoodmould, weathered label stops. C19 plank door. Nave aisle proper with C19 pointed window with 2 cusped lights and oculus under hoodmould with foliated label stops. To the east, a 2 stage ashlar dressed buttress with 3 light window beyond under four centred head with hoodmould with foliated label stops. Another ashlar dressed 2 stage buttress to east with coped gable above with moulded termination. Above, a large ornate, ashlar dressed chimney. North vestry by Fowler with plinth and north facing door to east with Caenarnvon lead and plank door. Angle buttress of 2 stages with pronounced plinths project east and north. East end of vestry has plinth and pointed window with 2 cusped lights, quatrefoil, hoodmould and foliated label stops, basically C19 but re-using some C13 fragments. C19 chancel with plinth and moulded stringcourse which rises to run at a higher level over east front beneath east window. The latter by Fowler re-using C14 masonry, of 2 lights each divided by 2 cusped lights with trefoils set in mouchettes, and with hoodmould and ornate label stops. Angle buttresses of 2 stages with plinth. Open gable above with finial. South side of chancel has 2 windows with 2 stage buttress with plinth in between. Each window of 2 cusped lights with trefoil above under pointed head, with hoodmould and foliated label stops. Window to west is longer than that to east with lower stringcourse. Early C13 south aisle of nave with ashlar dressed plinth and south projecting angle buttress. C19 window to east with 3 cusped lights under 4 centred head with hoodmould and foliated label stops. Single stage, early C13 buttress to west with C19 set off. Plinth terminates at buttress. Early C13 plate traceried window of 2 cusped lights with quatrefoil above under pointed head. Some of cusps restored in C19. Hoodmould above. Early C13 blocked doorway to west with moulded jambs, fragmentary palmette capital on east jamb, moulded imposts, that to the west damaged, and pointed head with single roll moulding and hoodmould. 3 stage angle buttress with plinth beyond. Coped gable to south with moulded south termination. West side of south aisle has single tall C19 lancet. Small, early C13 interior tower arch with double chamfered pointed head, polygonal responds with plain moulded capitals and polygonal abaci. Narrow, early C13 corbel head set above. Early C13 north and south responds partially restored by Fowler. Each of 3 bays with pointed double chamfered arches springing from variety of supports. North west, south west, north east and south east responds, the arches die away into the wall. The first north and south piers to the east are octagonal with unusual looped corbels in spandrels supporting outer order of each. The second piers east on north and south sides are large rectangular blocks with chamfered corners. These also support single double chamfered pointed arches reaching over north and south aisles. That on south is C13 and supported on south wall by large corbel of grimacing man with toothache. That on north by Fowler and supported on north wall by ornate foliated corbel. Pointed double chamfered chancel arch, the inner order supported by moulded corbels. Pointed hoodmould with foliated label stops. North wall of chancel has large C19 recess for organ with double chamfered pointed arch with small vestry door to east with chamfered surround. Ornate C19 aumbry to east. Filleted stringcourse runs above and over east wall, onto the south at lower level, with ornate foliated terminations. East window flanked by nook shafts. East window on south wall has recess below to form sedilia. Late C19 and early C20 pews, altar rail, lectern and pulpit. C19 roofs. Ornate marble C19 reredos with turrets, battlements, crockets, finials, inset mosaic and marble etc. C14 octagonal stone font on C19 moulded base. Panels contain quatrefoils with ribbon and diamond decoration. 3 large late C19 oil paintings of lives of St. Peter and Christ. C16 gravestone in south aisle with face and praying hands seen through a large quatrefoil as if through an opening in a coffin lid. Listing NGR: TF1229994738
