Description

TF 19 SE KIRMOND-LE-MIRE MAIN STREET (north side) 7/8 Church of St Martin 1.11.66. G/V. II Parish Church. 1847 by W A Nicholson. Coursed ironstone rubble with limestone ashlar dressings and some rendered brick. Fishscale tiled roofs with stone coped gables with ornate chevroned terminations and finials and plain tiles. West bellcote, nave with south porch and rectangular chancel with north vestry and lean to. Ashlar plinth and moulded stringcourse runs round whole church. West front flanked by 2 stage angle buttresses. 2 pointed lights with nook shafts, hoodmoulds and labelstops with elongated oculus above. Bellcote with pointed opening with nook shafts, hoodmould and labelstops, with small gable and finial above. Northside of nave has 2 pointed windows with nook shafts, hoodmoulds and labelstops. Small chimmney at east end of nave. Chancel has wooden lean to with corrigated ironroof. Rendered brick vestry with plain tile roof, 2 small buttresses and pointed east window. East end of chancel has central 2 stage buttress flanked by 2 pointed lights with nook shafts with chip star moulded heads. Trefoil above. South side of chancel has flattened triangular headed doorway with chipstar decoration, nook shafts and hoodmould that runs into stringcourse, with finial above and plank door. 2 stage buttress to west with pointed window beyond with nook shafts, chip star decoration, hoodmould and label stops. 2 stage buttress where nave projects slightly, 2 light window with nook shafts, hoodmould and label stops with porch beyond with squat angle buttresses and pointed south doorway of 2 orders, hoodmould and labelstops. Porch interior has pointed doorway with filleted rollmoulding chipstar decoration, flanking shafts, hoodmould, labelstops and plank door. Pointed chancel arch with keeled shafts flanked by nook shafts with shaft rings, and chipstar decoration, hoodmould and labelstops. Nave roof supported on ornate corbel heads. Caenarvon headed vestry door. C19 fittings and C19 monuments. Listing NGR: TF1854492626
