TA 10 SW CABOURNE MAIN STREET (north side) 1/6 Church of St Nicholas 1.11.66. G.V. II* Parish church. C11, C15, 1872 by Sir A.W. Bomfield. Ironstone rubble, ironstone and limestone ashlar. Plain tile roofs. West tower, nave, south porch, rectangular chancel and north recess. Cll west tower with bell stage of 1872. Plinth on all 3 sides. West doorway with round headed arch with voussoirs, plain tympanum, large impost blocks and C20, ribbed door with rectangular head. Single narrow lancet above. Moulded stringcourse of 1872 runs underneath bell openings on all 4 sides, each consisting of 2 round headed lights divided by plain shaft with cushion capital. Plain, heavy corbel table above, moulded eaves and steeply pointed pyramidal roof with weather vane. Nave and chancel mostly rebuilt in 1872, plinth runs round north aisle. Paired Cl9 lights with hoodmoulds flank blocked Cll doorway with round headed arch, plain tympanum with roll above, imposts and chamfered jambs. To the east a single C19 lancet. Plinth continues round chancel and north projection. Single Cll lancet re-set in latter. East end has cluster of C19 lancets with hoodmoulds and ornate floral label stops. Coped gable above with finial. Below, 2 Cll grave markers with round heads with crosses on rectangular bases lean against the wall. Plinth continues round southside of chancel and nave. Chancel has paired C19 lancets with hoodmould based on pre-1872 window design. Single blocked Cll lancet to west. Nave has pair of C19 lancets and a single C19 lancet to west, all with hoodmoulds. C19 porch with ashlar dressed plinth and paired lancets on east and west walls. Squat clasping, ashlar dressed buttresses flanked pointed doorways with filleted hoodmould, floral label stops and moulded jambs. Coped gable above with finial. Porch interior has pointed C19 doorway with roll moulding and plank rectangular door. West of porch, C15 rectangular window remains with 2 cusped ogee lights with hoodmould. Large Cll interior tower arch with roundhead, voussoirs, large heavy impost blocks and quoined jambs. C19 double chamfered pointed chancel arch with inner order supported on corbel. Cl9 double chamfered pointed arch leads to north recess. East window is flanked by nook shafts supporting roll moulded arch with fillet. Filleted hoodmould with floral stops. C19 roofs, C20 pews, pulpit and lecturn. C19 aumbry in south wall of chancel. Late Cll drum font with interlaced arches with cable decoration above and below.
