Description

SK 97 SE BURTON MIDDLE STREET north side) 9/20 Essex House G.V. II House. Mid C17 with C18 and early C19 alterations. Coursed limestone rubble, ashlar quoins, ashlar and brick dressings, pantiled roof with raised brick coped gables, single brick axial stack, gable stack and wall stacks. T-plan with later rear service range. Plan comprises a 2 storey with garret parlour cross wing, 2 storey with attic wing with one and a half storey hall block beyond. 4 bay front with off centre C19 6 panelled door, 2 pane overlight having a decorative wrought iron grille, wooden doorcase with narrow moulded hood. In front of the door are splayed and ramped wrought iron handrails with twisted balusters and conical knops. To left of door a single tripartite glazing bar sash with flat arch lintel anti to right a single c18 glazing bar sash and beyond in cross wing are glazed double doors with 4 paned overlight. To first floor at left a 4 light through eaves casement in tile hung gable. To right are 2 C18 glazing bar sashes. All C18 openings have timber lintels. In the roof a 2 light dormer with lead roof and cheeks. In the tumbled brick gable of the cross wing is a 2 light glazing bar casement with segmental head. Inside, are moulded and stopped beams in the parlour block and stopped beams upstairs; the hall, probably the previous kitchen end, has 2 roughly splayed beams. C19 marble fireplace in hall.
