CHERRY WILLINGHAM CHURCH LANE (east side) Church of St. Peter and St. Paul TF 07 SW 3/27 Listed 30.11.66 G.V. Grade I Parish church. 1753. Limestone ashlar. Shallow gabled lead covered roof behind parapet. Wooden west cupola with lead covered cap. West cupola, nave and chancel in one with smaller, projecting eastern apse. Plinth. Quoined corners. West front with central Tuscan doorway with flanking half columns supporting entablature and pediment. Inner round headed doorway with Tuscan pilastered surround, moulded head and raised keystone inscribed 1753. Panelled doors. Large pediment above with octagonal cupola set back above, with 8 round moulded arches with Tuscan pilastered supports and raised keystones. Ogee shaped cap with ornate weather vane. North side with 3 large round headed windows with Tuscan pilastered surround, moulded head and raised keystone. Projecting moulded eaves above and broad parapet. Eastern apse with 2 large round headed windows with Tuscan pilastered surround, moulded head and raised keystone. Projecting moulded eaves and broad parapet above. South side with 3 large round headed windows with Tuscan pilastered surround, moulded head and raised keystone. Projecting moulded eaves and broad parapet above. Interior with modillioned cornice. Fine C18 wooden reredos with lugged corners and open pediment above, egg and dart borders, painted red, blue and gold. C19 altar rail. C20 ornate altar with ionic columns painted blue and gold. C18 stone font inscribed with 'Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not.' Bowl with acorn cups, bindweed and tulip heads. Tall ornate base. Eagle lecturn of 1870. C19 paschal candle. C18 polygonal pulpit painted dark red with fielded panels and ornate brackets supporting reading board. C18 pews painted dark red. Monument to Mary Dell, died 1795. Grey shaped ground with white marbled tomb chest, pilastered panel below with beribboned flowers and palms. Monument to John Harrowsmith, died 1840. Limestone ashlar with ornate crocketed and finialled gable, inner pointed cusped arch with nook shafts. Monument to Thomas Becke, died 1757, founder and patron of the church who made a fortune in law 'without the sordid means of avaricious parsimony'. Ornate broken pediment with central cartouche with coat-of-arms. Flanking fluted ionic pilasters with central round headed niche with ornate keystone. Large moulded apron. Monument to Robert Featherby, died 1834, of ashlar with inner 4 centred arch and angel brackets below. Monument to Mary Judith Hutton, died 1809, with grey and white streaked marble shaped ground with white marble tomb chest with orange marble bands. Monument to Henry Hutton, died 1836, with grey marble shaped ground, white marble tomb chest with beribboned palms. Listing NGR: TF0318272409
