Description

TF 19 SE STAINTON-LE-VALE MANOR LANE (east side) 7/17 Church of 1.11.66. St. Andrew II Parish church. c1300, restored 1886 and c1914 after falling into ruin in C17. Ironstone rubble, ashlar dressings, some brick with rendering. Slate roofs. West tower including west porch, nave and chancel in one, north vestry. Squat west tower of c1300 with triple chamfered pointed arch and plain polygonal jambs with moulded imposts. Porch interior has flanking stone benches and a triple chamfered pointed doorway with polygonal joists, plain capitals and moulded imposts, and C19 plank doors. North and south sides of tower have large buttresses in eastern corners up to bell chamber level, with plinths on exposed sides, and stringcourse on west sides only. Bell chamber openings on 3 sides, that to the west, a single damaged plain pointed light, that on the north has a triangular head, that on south has a pointed head. Plain eaves of c1914 with small rectangular blocks on corners. Weather vane. Rectangular north vestry of 1914 with lean-to roof. Narrow door to west with wood lintel and plank door. 2 light partially fixed mullion window to east, with leaded lights. Gravestone set in wall below. Chimney in south east corner. North aisle proper has 2 stage buttress with set off, partially visible where vestry joins wall. To the east is a pointed window with tracery of c1914 with 2 stage buttress beyond with added bulging lower stage. Damaged wall to east has traces of former window visible. North east angle buttress of 3 stages. East end rebuilt in c1914 with large pointed window in tracery. Embedded in wall to the north is a polygonal pier with plain moulded capital, necking, base and abacus scored with 2 grooves. Embedded in wall to the south is remnant of columnar arcade pier with necking and plain capital. South aisle has 4 stage south east angle buttress. 4 large pointed blocked arches of original south arcade visible. 2 large pointed windows with tracery of c1914 set in alternate arches. Flanking the windows are fragmentary moulded and grooved abaci of original arcade capitals of 4 clustered shafts embedded in wall. Partially visible chamfered arches of south arcade. Small low buttress with plinth and single set off to west. Interior south arcade embedded in south wall visible in fragmentary condition. The western most capital remnant of a cluster has roll moulding with fillet. Second capital from west has large, single circular capital partially visible. 3rd pier from west has fragmentary cluster of 2 shafts with plain capitals and grooved abaci. Eastern most pier has fragmentary cluster of 2 shafts with plain capital and grooved abacus. Deep set vestry door on north side with segmental head and plain parellel doors. C19 plank wainscotting to sills, C19 pews, lectern etc. C20 octagonal font. Listing NGR: TF1762294413
