Description

TF 09 NE HOLTON LE MOOR OFF CHURCH LANE (south side) 5/6 Holton Hall 1-11-66 G.V. II* Small country house; 1785 with C19 additions and C20 alterations. By J. Warmer, a local builder; Red brick with ashlar dressings, pantile roof, stone coped gables with kneelers, and 2 brick gable stacks. L-plan. 3 storey, 5 bay garden front with brick plinth, 1st and 2nd floor bands and dentillated eaves course. Central half glazed door with traceried Gothick fanlight flanked by fluted Doric columns with full metope entablature and open pediment over. To either side are curved handrails to a baluster. The doorcase is flanked by 2 glazing bar sashes. On the 1st floor are 5 similar windows and on the 2nd floor 5 shorter glazing bar sashes. All windows have flat splayed lintels with raised keystones. The side front has a single glazing bar sash to ground and 1st floor and a smaller painted blank opening to 2nd floor. There is a further early C19 3 storey 4 bay wing and a 2 storey 4 bay wing to the rear. The 3 storey range comprises one C20 wide door under an elliptical arch with traceried fanlight with to the right 3 deep glazing bar sashes. To the 1st floor is a glazing bar sash with 3 tripartite sashes to the right. To the 2nd floor are 3 glazing bar sashes and one tripartite sash. All windows on the side front have segmental brick arches and raised keystones. The interior has moulded cornices, panelled doors and window shutters. The staircase has carved strings and elegant turned balusters. The house was built for the Dixon family. Listing NGR: TF0835497802
