Description
Seventh amendment of 31st list dated 9 April 1992. Address and description amended. HORBLING No 1 HIGH STREET The Old School TF 13 NW 1815-1/133 GV Grade II School with attached Schoolmaster's house. Dated 1845; enlarged 1892. Red brick with limestone ashlar dressings, slate roof. 1 storey and attic; 1:3:1 bay front, the outer bays gabled and set forward; additional range to rear and later wing to right return. In Tudor Gothic Revival style: ashlar plinth and quoins; chamfered, mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. School House (2 Spring Lane) occupies bays 1-3. Main doorway to bay 2 has moulded Tudor-arched surround with hoodmould and part-glazed, panelled door. Original margin-glazed and latticed iron casements: bay 1 with 3-light beneath 2-light window; bay 3 with canted, 1:2:1 light bay window with ashlar roof; above is a sundial and a gabled dormer with 2-light window under cornice and dated shield. The Old School (1 High Street) occupies bays 4 and 5 and the wing on right return. Doorway to bay 4 matches that of house but has narrow-panelled door. Bay 5 with transomed 3-light window beneath gable slit. Wing set back on right has Tudor-arched doorway on left of cross-window. Each gable has kneelers with gablets, ashlar copings and finials. Twin-flue stacks to left end and to right of bay 2: quoined plinths and octagonal shafts with annulets and cornices. Right return: gable of wing has transomed, 3-light window and finial set on a corbel carved as a man with open book. Two single-flue stacks and lean-to on right. The former listing address and description: HORBLING HIGH STREET (west side) Old School and Schoolmaster's House TF 13 NW 1/133 G.V. Grade II School with attached schoolteacher's house,now 2 houses. 1851, enlarged 1892. Red brick, limestone ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with steeply pitched stone coped gables with kneelers and finials. Moulded brick eaves; single gable and ridge stacks and single stack to rear, all with tall polygonal ashlar shafts. 2 storey, 5 bay front with ashlar dressed plinth and quoins. Projecting gabled bay to left with 3 light ashlar dressed mullion window with moulded cornice. Doorway to right with four centred head, moulded cornice, ashlar dressed doorcase and partially glazed door. Canted ashlar dressed window to right with central 2 light mullion window flanked by single lights. Rectangular sundial above. Doorway beyond with four-centred head, moulded cornice, ashlar dressed doorcase and panelled door. Large schoolroom 3 light mullion, ashlar dressed window to right with transom and moulded cornice. Slit light above. 2 light ashlar dressed mullion window above left hand bay, with moulded cornice. Central gabled dormer with 2 light mullion window, with moulded cornice, kneelers, finial and shield in gable. East side with 2 cross mullion, ashlar dressed windows with moulded cornices. East wing of 1892 with ashlar dressed plinth, quoins and moulded brick eaves. Doorway to left with four centred head, moulded cornice, ashlar dressed doorcase and plank door. Cross mullioned ashlar dressed window to right. Steeply pitched gabled east front with 3 light ashlar dressed mullion schoolroom window with transom and moulded cornice. Slit light above. Ashlar finial supported by corbel of a man with a book. Listing NGR: TF1180935196
