Description
SK 85 SE FENTON MAIN STREET (west side) 1/20 Fenton Hall G.V. II Small country house. 1597, 1642, early C19, C20. Blue lias coursed rubble with limestone dressings, red brick, rendering, slate roofs, late C16, early C17 cross wing to south with stone coped gables, kneelers and finials. Large red brick tripartite and single wall stacks on south return. Early C19 service wing to north with lower pitched roof and 2 stacks. Cross wing has single 3 light transom and mullion window on ground floor with datestone above, possibly re-used, inscribed "1597 P.L." with coat of arms. Above, a 3 light mullion window and a 4 light mullion gable window with taller central 2 lights. To north, 2 storey 3 bay early C19 range with blocked central doorway flanked by single windows with 3 above, all with glazing bar sashes and segmental heads. At rear, some C17 sections of wall and windows survive from original hall burnt down in 1750. Interior roof space above these remnants contains burnt C16 or C17 timbers. Interior of eastern ground floor room of cross wing has "1642 S.R." scratched in plaster near window. Listing NGR: SK8788650691
