Description

BARROWBY SK8736 CHURCH STREET 1315-0/12/9 (West side (off)) 19/02/52 Barrowby Old Hall II House. c1600, remodelled early C19, incoporating medieval fragments, perhaps from an earlier house, and mid C19 brick additions. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and Collyweston slate and concrete tile roofs. 3 coped ashlar gable stacks, that to the left gable external. Quoins, wooden eaves board and gutter brackets. 2 storeys. L-plan. First floor windows are mainly 9-pane sashes in 4-centred arched recesses. Entrance front, 4 windows, has irregular fenestration. To left, a cusped single lancet with moulded surround. Below, a central, cusped, 2-light window with 4-centred arch. To right, a large 16-pane sash with C16 moulded surround and label mould. To its right, a C19 doorway with 4-centred arch. Other windows C19. Right wing has 2 reset mask corbels, and above them a C19 3-light casement. Below, to left, a cusped single lancet in a coved square headed surround. To its right, a large late C20 window. Garden front, 7 windows, has a slightly off-centre external shouldered ashlar stack, flanked to left by 4 windows and to right by 3. 2 windows at the left end have segmental heads. Below, the stack is flanked to right by a tall 12-pane sash, then a cusped 2-light window. To left, a 9-pane window. All these openings have 4-centred arched recesses. To left again, a moulded pointed arched doorway with hood mould, then 3 large segment headed 16-pane sashes. Attached to the left gable, a C19 lead water pump with wooden case. Interior: entrance hall has C16 gable headed doorway to garden front, and early C19 dogleg stair with winder and landing. Double stick balusters and ramped scrolled handrail. Central hall has 4-centred arched doorway, full height linenfold panelling and moulded beams. 4-centred arched fireplace with cable moulding. The room above is said to have a similar fireplace.
