HARLAXTON SK8932 GRANTHAM ROAD 1315-0/15/165 (East side (off)) 24/09/79 Walls, steps and gazebos to south-west of forecourt at Harlaxton Manor I Terrace and garden walls, steps and gazebos. c1838-1854. Probably by William Burn for Gregory Gregory. Ashlar, with sculptures in Coade stone. Renaissance Revival style. The terrace wall forming the south west side of the forecourt has a short flight of steps flanked by pedestals topped with lions, leading to a square platform with balustrade walls and strapwotk pedestals topped with urns. From the platform, a polygonal staircase rises between balustrades with strapwork pedestals and urns to a gateway with wrought-iron gates. Square gatepiers with rusticated corner pilasters, topped with figures of children and dogs. On either side, terrace wall with plain coping and intermediate pedestals with moulded flat caps topped with urns. Buttressed north west terrace wall has at each end a raised section with pilasters and volutes, then a gazebo. Blocked door to right. Square gazebos, single storey plus basement, have slated square ogee domes topped with finials. Stepped angle buttresses, cornice, corner pedestals with finials, and blind dormers with rusticated round arches and finials. On 3 sides, an unglazed 12-light cross mullioned window. On the inner side, a similar window with a doorcase set before it, with a moulded lintel, half-round pediment and 3 finials. South west side has an off-centre viewing point flanked by massive volutes, and to its left, a triple gateway with wrought-iron gates and overthrow, and square piers with cornices. South east side has a low screen wall with openings and 2 pairs of steps. Round arched blind arcade, moulded coping and pedestals with ball finials. This building appears within Harlaxton Manor Gardens which are on the Gardens Register at grade II*.
