Description
SWINSTEAD off PARK ROAD (east side) Summer House (formerly listed as Swinstead Water Tower at Park Farm) TF 02 SW 6/235 Grade I Summer house. c.1720 by Sir John Vanbrugh, with C19 raising at the rear and alterations, possibly due to J. B. Papworth, C20 alterations. Ashlar. Pyramidal lead roofs, slate roofs. T- plan. 3 storey, 3 bay front, with chamfered plinth, coved first and second floor bands, plain parapet. The outer bays are recessed tallertowers. Central C19 5 light window with large square mullions. The reveals of original doorway to front can still be seen, flanked by single blank openings. To first floor a central semi-circular headed window flanked by single fixed lights. To second floor a 3 light C19 opening with square mullions is flanked by single semi-circular headed windows. All semi-circular headed windows have moulded impost blocks. Other openings have splayed ashlar lintels. On the side walls are single blank openings to the lower storeys and at the top single semi-circular headed windows. Original windows have glazing bars. Ground storey only of rear wing survives, raised and of rendered brick in C19. It has blank semi-circular panels to the rear and right hand walls. Interior has semi-circular headed doorways, one flanked by hemispherically headed niches. Listing NGR: TF0216022469
