Description

SH 94 SE ANCASTER MAIN STREET (west side) 6/5 Ancaster Hall 19-9-52 G.V. II* House, now subdivided into flats. C17, with C18 and C19 additions and alterations. Dressed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings. Stone coped gables and finial at north end, two stone ridge stacks, one near south end, plain tiled roof. L-plan originally with circa 1700 parallel range added to rear of front. Two storey with garrets, 4 bay facade with plinth and narrow moulded eaves cornice. Off centre early C18 double doors with six panels and rectangular overlight having eared stone surround, pulvinated frieze and pediment over, flanked by to the left a single two light C19 casement window with stone mullion and to right 2 similar. The south elevation has part of a moulded string course and restored windows matching those at the front. Traces of an earlier C17 phase with moulded plinth can also be seen on the south side. Interior; a fine early C18 dog leg staircase with turned balusters rises in a hall with contemporary decorated plaster ceilings. Principal rooms on ground floor have good early C18 oak dado panelling. At the front of the house is a C18 low stone balustrade with shaped balusters on a base of large pecked stone blocks. It is open in front of the door, and was evidently intended to lend dignity to the facade. Listing NGR: SK9829543599
