Description

SK 9450-9550 FULBECK HIGH STREET (west) 7/78 Ermine House 19-2-52 II* Small country house; C17 with substantail early C18 remodelling, possibly by William Sands the Younger. (c/f. peaked parapet at Wyberton Hall, Nr. Boston). Coursed limestone rubble with brick quoins and first floor band and ashlar dressings. Plain tiled roof with plain parapet surmounted by peaked pediment having central acorn finial, stonecoped gables with finials at the bases, and 2 moulded gable stacks. Parallel ranges 2 storey, 5 bay front with cellars. Central half glazed door with traceried overlight flanked by engaged Tuscan columns supporting a moulded pediment over. To either side of the door are pairs of windows with plain ashlar frames. On the first floor are 5 similar windows; all windows are glazing bar sashes. To the right is a gabled single storey wing, the rear parts of which are C17. Inside the house is a good early C18 staircase to full height with delicate turned balusters and ramped handrails at the angles. The back stair has an unusual openwork balustrade in the Chinese taste. In the dining room is a cupboard having a moulded surround with keystone, a pulvinated frieze and a pediment; also an early C19 fireplace and dado panelling. First floor chamber on right has a stone fireplace with panelled surround and a fluted keystone; also a cupboard with a dentillated frieze. Rear range has a late C17 staggered butt purlin softwood roof. Listing NGR: SK9469750296
