Description

TF 01 NE WITHAM ON THE HILL MAIN STREET (south side) 2/292 Witham Hall and 30.10.68 3 archways - II Former country house, now preparatory school and 3 archways. c1730, extended c1830, 1876 and substantially altered and extended 1903-5 by A N Prentice, architect. Ashlar, hipped Collyweston slate roofs with lead dressings, numerous ashlar ridge stacks with moulded cornices. H-plan. The original 5 bay house had slightly projecting 2 bay wings added in C19, altered 1903, and a further projecting block to the right added in 1903. Two storey with attics, 9 bay front having plinth, first floor band, moulded eaves cornice, dentillated to the sides, rusticated quoins. Central glazed double doors in rusticated surround with segmental pediment re-used, set in a single storey bow with cornice and flat lead roof, added 1903, having pairs of windows to either side. The bow is flanked by 3 windows, the outer pair having triangular pediments. To first floor are 9 windows. To the outer shaped gables are single windows. In the roof are 5 C20 gabled dormers with scrolled pediments and slate hung cheeks. All windows are glazing bar sashes with moulded stone architraves and keyblocks. The C20 wing to the right has a 3 bay 2 storey bow to the centre of the side elevation and is in a complimentary style. The interior was entirely remade in 1905 but in a C18 style. Attached to the rear service block is a gateway with Tudor arch, set in rectangular hood. In the spandrels are single armorial shields, with moulded string course and triangular top containing date 1830 in lozenge and have side pinnacles. Two other similar archways also to the rear are dated 1876 and 1906. Listing NGR: TF0502116715
