Description
SK 79 SE EAST STOCKWITH FRONT STREET 7/20 No.49, gate and railings II* Former vicarage, now house, gate and railings. C.1800 with late C19 addition. Stucco and brick with pantile hipped roof and 2 ridge brick stacks. 3 bay 2 storey front of stucco, with plinth. 1st floor band having Greek key ornament and 4 pilasters which have anthemion panels at their junction with the band and rise to support a frieze containing applied shell and lion headmotifs. Above is an entablature and plain parapet surmounted by stumpy pinnacles over the pilasters. The central 2 arched doorway has a door panelled w-ith Gothick tracery and overlight with tracery of arches, diapers and circles, all set in a moulded surround with hood mould and shield label stops. To either side are single bow windows with glazing bar sashes having Gothick tracery to the upper parts and lights separated by clustered colonnettes, a frieze containing blank quatrefoil panels and lead roofs over. To 1st floor is a central glazed quatrefoil in a moulded circular surround flanked by single glazing bar sashes in moulded surrounds. The upper parts of the windows have 4 centred traceried arches with stained glass panels and trefoils in the spandrels. The late C19 addition to the left is in brick with hipped pantile roof; 2 storeys, 2 bays, having tripartite window with planked carriage arch to left and above 2 glazing bar sashes. To the rear of the earlier house are 2 projecting oriels on timber brackets to the 1st floor. The interior has a dog leg stair with wreathed handrail supported on decorative cast iron baluster panels each individually moulded in the Greek style. The right hand room has a deeply moulded cornice and a decorative plaster ceiling in high relief. The double doors to the garden have traceried glazing and stained glass panels and borders. Most doors have contemporary moulded architraves and fittings and there are 2 early C19 fireplace surrounds. The gate and railings in front of the house have a stone plinth and a design of pierced Greek fret with above a pattern of intersecting ogee arches topped by a rail with spade shaped finials.
