BILLINGBOROUGH HIGH STREET TF 1034-1134 (east side) 4/22 The Old Hall 6.5.52 G.V. II* Small country house, now home for the elderly. Late C16, early C17, c.1660, early and late C18, early C19. Coursed limestone rubble, limestone ashlar, some red brick. Collyweston tiles with red ridge tiling, stone coped gables with ball finials and 2 large tripartite stacks, one of ashlar, one of rendered brick; and single tall rendered brick lateral stack. Late C16 H-plan with early C17 bay added to west; the northern U of the H enclosed in c.1660, the southern U, in the early C18. 2 storeys with attics and cellar, 7 bay north front with 3 gables over the 6 bays to left and small gabled early C17 bay to right. 2 lines of quoins separate the 2 central bays from the 2 outer bays on each side revealing their insertion into the original H plan. Early C19 doorway to left with plain doorcase, overlight and partially glazed door. Single mid C17 cross mullion window with casements to left. Mid C19 canted bay window to right with 3 long glazing bar sashes divided by slender pilasters. 2 light C17 mullion basement window to right with cross mullion window with casements above. Mid C19 canted bay window fills the 2 bays beyond with 3 glazing bar sashes. Early C17 4 light cavetto mullion window to right with moulded cornice. 6 cross mullion windows of c.1660 above with casements, and with 3 light early C17 cavetto mullion window to right with moulded cornice and with illegible datestone above. 3 three light mullion windows with casements in the 3 larger gables to left. West side of early Cl7 range with single 2 light cavetto mullion window with casements and moulded cornice. Early C18 3 storied porch to right with early C19 lean-to addition built against it. Early C18 bolection moulded ashlar doorcase with large raised keystone and double, partially glazed doors. 2 three light cavetto mullion windows above, one above the other, and both with moulded cornices. Early C19 ground floor panelling runs southwards with 11 ogee headed panels and a variety of casements inserted. A 3 light cavetto mullion window above, with moulded cornice. 7 bay south front with pair of outer gabled bays plus smaller gabled earlier C17 bay with kneelers, to left. 2 lines of quoins separate the 3 central early C18 bays from the 2 outer bays on each side thus revealing their insertion into an earlier H plan. Doorway to right with C18 ashlar lintel with keystone, overlight and double, partially glazed doors. Single glazing bar sash beyond with segmental head with ashlar lintel and keystone. Doorway to left with ashlar wedge lintel, overlight and partially glazed door. 2 glazing bar sashes to left with ashlar wedge lintels and 2 glazing bar sashes beyond with raised keystones. 7 glazing bar sashes above with segmental heads and raised keystones. Moulded eaves above central 3 bays with ashlar coped parapet above and 2 pedimented dormers with 2 light casements. outer pairs of bays each with a single glazing bar sash in gable, with segmental head and raised keystone. Earlier C17 bay to left set back a little with a 4 light cavetto mullion window with casements and moulded cornice; with a 3 light cavetto mullion window above, also with casements and moulded cornice. Very narrow gabled bay to left with C19 panelled ground floor and small oriel window above with 2 light mullion casement. East front with 4 bays with early C19 doorway inserted to right with traceried overlight and panelled door leading to servants' staircase to attic rooms. 2 C18 glazing bar sashes to left with another to the right, with 2 glazing bar sashes above, all with ashlar wedge lintels. Early C19, 2 storey red brick extension to north east with C20 fenestration. Fine heavy oak 2 flight return staircase of c.1660 with heavy turned balusters with 4 clustered round the newel and thickly moulded handrail. Fielded panelled walls. Hall doorway with C17 oak doorcase with broken pediment, eared, moulded architrave and later panelled door. 3 early C18 doorways on first floor with bolection moulded doorcases and panelled doors. Mid C17 stone fireplace in drawing room with flat head, chamfered corners, quite flat profile and C20 bracketed stone mantlepiece. Listing NGR: TF1173434291
