Description
STIXWOULD MAIN STREET TF 16 NE (west side) 6/44 Abbey Farm House (Formerly listed as 14-9-66 II Stixwould Abbey) Farmhouse. Early C17 incorporating some medieval material from the site of Stixwould Priory behind the house, with C18, C19 and C20 alterations. Coursed limestone rubble, rendered on the front, having old plain tiled roof to front and pantile to rear with single gable and 2 ridge stacks. T-plan. 2 storey with attic, irregular 9 bay front, the right hand end 2 bays project in a cross wing. Off-centre C20 panelled door having contemporary open Doric porch, replacing a C19 open porch, flanked by 3 glazing bar sashes. Beyond to the right are 2 further glazing bar sashes. To first floor are 7 similar windows and one further is in the gable of the right hand cross wing. All windows have cambered heads. In the roof are 2 glazing bar sash dormers with cambered roofs and lead cheeks. Throughout the side and rear walls many fragments of medieval masonry, some decorated, are incorporated in the fabric and in the rear wall is a C14 cusped and crocketed niche. The interior retains a fine moulded and stopped beam in the parlour. The roof is of staggered butt purlin construction, with numbered principals, reusing some medieval smoke blackened timbers. Stixwould Priory was a nunnery of the Cistercian order. Listing NGR: TF1737265995
