Description

TF 34 SW FRAMPTON RALPHS LANE (south side) 11/72 Church of St. Michael II Private chapel to Tunnard family at Frampton House, now Chapel of Ease. 1863 by James Fowler. In Geometric Decorated style. Rock faced limestone ashlar, with plain ashlar dressings, plain tiled roof with decorative ridge tiles. Nave with western bellcote, facetted chancel, south porch and vestry. The west end has 3 stepped buttresses and a 3 light window. The octagonal bellcote is supported on a moulded corbel with foliate decoration, the open bell chamber has columns with foliate capitals supporting the small spire which has zigzag decoration to the base and single lucarnes to each main face. The north side has 2 two light windows. The gabled vestry has a 2 light window with shafted central mullion and an octagonal chimney stack with gablette to north side, having fish-scale decoration. The facetted chancel has 5 lancets with trefoils in the head. The south side of the nave has 2 two light windows as the north. All windows have hood moulds with foliate stops and geometric tracery. The gabled porch has stepped buttresses with decorative gables. The outer doorway is trefoil headed with shafted reveals and leafy decoration in the spandrels. The inner doorway is pointed. Interior. Red brick walls with ashlar bands and polychromatic rear arches. Blank quatrefoil frieze below dentiilated cornice. Chancel arch springs from triple marble wall shafts, foliate capitals and moulded arch. In the north wall of the chancel is a pointed doorway and arch to organ chamber, the doorway leading to pulpit staircase which emerges through pointed arches with central marble shaft to octagonal ashlar pulpit with foliage to rim. Tiled chancel and reredos, with tiled text to cornice. Contemporary stained glass to chancel. Fittings. Brass corona set with semi precious stones en cabochon, in the chancel. Octagonal limestone font with decorated quatrefoils to sides on octagonal base with marble shafts. Listing NGR: TF3016240527
