Description

TF 57 SW CUMBERWORTH MAIN STREET (west side) 2/16 Church of St. Helen 3.2.67 II Parish church, now closed. C13, C14, C15, 1838 rebuilding. Squared greenstone and limestone rubble, red brick patching and overbuilding, and render, slate roofs, lead covered turret and spire. Nave with western bellcote turret and spire, chancel, vestry. The 3 light west window has C19 tracery in C14 surround. Octagonal lead covered bell turret with pointed gabled louvred openings and short spire. The north side is rendered and has 2 three light reticulated traceried windows with hood moulds. C19 vestry with planked door and 3 light window. The east window is of 3 lights with Cl9 reticulated tracery and hood. In the south wall of the chancel a pointed priest's doorway possibly C13 and a Cl9 3 light window set at high level. The south wall of the nave has 2 three light windows with Cl9 reticulated tracery and hoods, in original chamfered openings. C14 continuously moulded pointed doorway and hood mould with human head stops. Interior. Cl9 double chamfered chancel arch, and pointed niche in south wall. C19 Minton tiles to chancel floor. Fittings are Cl9 except for the fine octagonal font with shields in cusped panels and Symbols of the Passion, plain octagonal stem, base with rounded stop chamfers. The nave central aisle floor consists of 4 worn low relief effigies and margin inscriptions. Listing NGR: TF5062773739
