LITTLE CAWTHORPE CHURCH LANE TF 38 SE (west side) 9.3.67 The Manor House G.V. II* Small country house. 1673, early C20. Red brick. Plain tile and pantile roofs with shaped gables with bands of chevron and moulded brick, flanking ashlar ball finials and central ashlar pyramidal finials. Dentillated eaves and 4 stacks including 2 gable stacks each with 3 tall angle shafts, one ridge stack with 2 tall angle shafts and single tall polygonal stack to rear. T plan with small C20 rectangular extension to south and larger C20 extension to north, both in keeping with the original style, but of larger, browner brick. 2 storeys. East end of east range with blind arcade of moulded brick with flattened semi-circular heads, moulded imposts, the central archway being larger, the flanking archways with plinths. Small ashlar datestone above, inscribed: "1673". Ashlar coat of arms above and smaller illegible ashlar plaque above that. Blind arcade continues on the north side of the east range with 3 round headed arches, that to the left being larger and all with moulded imposts. Ashlar plaque above to right. South side of east range with single small slightly projecting rectangular bay window with 3 light casement. Single 3 light casement above with segmental head. East side of south range with C20 gabled porch to right with south doorway with shallow pointed head. Inner doorway with shallow pointed head, continuously chamfered surround and panelled door. Slit window in south return. 2 light casement to left. Large blind, 2 storey rectangular panel to left broken into by small C20 extension. The south side of this of 3 bays with a high plinth. Central, slightly projecting, small rectangular bay window with herringbone nogging and 5 light casement with transom. Window flanked by single small semi- circular headed blind openings with moulded brick imposts. Central cross mullion casement above with ornate rectangular hood mould. C20 shaped gable above echoes the C17 shaped gable set a few feet back. West side of 3 bay south range with single C20 bay to right with narrow casement. C20 polygonal tower to left with chevroned first floor and eaves band and south-west doorway with segmental head and plank door. Broad C17 bay to left with single 3 light casement with a similar casement above, both with segmental heads. 3 slit lights in first floor of tower. South side of west range with C20 gabled and finialled porch to the right with blocked opening to south with fixed window inserted into the shallow triangular head. Doorway in narrow east side with partially glazed door. 3 light casement to the left of the porch, with a 2 light casement above, both with segmental heads. West end of west range with broad, projecting stack of C20 brick. Set back, beyond, to the north, is an irregular C20 range including some blind arcading echoing the C17 arcading on the south range, and plain casements. Interior not inspected on this survey.
