Description

FOTHERBY CHURCH LANE TF 39 SW 4/21 Church of St. Mary 9.3.67 II Parish church. C13, 1863 rebuilding by James Fowler of Louth. Squared chalk and limestone, with sandstone dressings, slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles. Western tower, nave, chancel, south porch. Tower of 3 stages with clasping buttresses, stone octagonal spire with 4 lucarnes. Moulded eaves with fleurons. In the ground floor of the west side is a tall lancet. There are 4 similar smaller windows in the middle stage to each side and in the belfry are paired lights with shafts and quatrefoils. In the north wall are 2 paired lancets with cinquefoils over. There is a similar 3 light window in the east wall of the chancel. The chancel south wall has 2 lancets with cusped heads and in the nave are 3 windows matching those to the north. The steeply pitched gabled porch has a richly moulded outer door with floriate stops and an arched niche above. There are wooden side benches, trilobe side lights and a second moulded doorway within. Interior. The tower arch incorporates some early C13 masonry including keeled responds and double chamfered arch, however the capitals are entirely C19. The chancel arch is single chamfered of polychromatic brick on C19 paired annular shafts, with moulded hood and floriated stops. Nave and chancel walls of red facing brick with flush ashlar bands and all rear arches are of polychromatic brick, and the cornice is dentillated. All fittings are C19 apart from C15 plain octagonal font. Fragments of medieval masonry from Fotherby Church were removed at the time of the restoration to Brackenborough Hall where they were reused in the folly there. Listing NGR: TF3169991712
