Description
TF 39 NW FULSTOW CHURCHTHORPE 5/5 Church of St. Lawrence 9.9.67 G.V. II Parish church. Early C13, with 1868 rebuilding. Squared limestone and greenstone rubble with slate roofs. Nave with western bellcote, chancel and south porch. The west end retains the scar of the former tower. Above is a C19 gabled bellcote with single pointed opening containing a bell. The nave north wall has blocked 2 bay early C13 arcade with square abacii. The blocking contains 2 C19 2 light windows with cusped heads. The north wall of the chancel has 2 C19 lancets. The chancel east wall has a C19 3 light window with above a reset C13 projecting head. South wall of chancel matches that to the north. The south wall of the nave has a blocked early C13 3 bay arcade with single chamfered arches and annular abaci. In the blocking are 2 C19 3 light cusped headed windows. The C19 gabled south porch outer doorway has continuous double chamfered surround with above a reset C13 crucifix. The inner doorway is C13 with clustered shafts, capitals and moulded hood. Interior. The 2 bays of the north arcade have keeled shafts, square abacii and single chamfered arches. The 2 bays of the south arcade are also visible. East of the north arcade is a small pointed niche. The nave and chancel are undivided with a C19 roof throughout. Fittings and pews are all C19 and include 2 commandment boards on the chancel east wall. On the north wall is a painted panel of the arms of George III. The C13 font has a plain octagonal bowl and shafted base and has a C19 facetted wooden cover. Monuments. In the porch stand 2 fine late C13 effigies, one a knight with mail hauberk, surcoat and greaves, feet resting on a lion, with low sword belt and shield, head resting on a cushion. The other is of a lady with head-dress, flowing gown, buttoned sleeves, feet resting on a lion, head resting on a pillow with angel supporters. Also in the porch is a fragment of a cross shaft.
