BOSTON TF3343SW SKIRBECK ROAD 716-1/15/153 (South side) 14/02/75 St John's Buildings (Formerly Listed as: SKIRBECK ROAD (South side) Former workhouse, gate piers and wall to former workhouse) GV II Workhouse front range, now derelict with the rear ranges demolished in 1980. 1837 by George Gilbert Scott. Ashlar front, red brick rear wall, hipped Welsh slate roofs, 2 ridge stacks. EXTERIOR: single storey, 11-bay front arranged 1:2:2:1:2:2:1 with central raised and slightly advanced pedimented bay over tall carriage archway, flanked by 5-bay wings, the 2-bay centre of each wing being advanced and separately roofed. Plinth, pilasters to ends and between bays, plain frieze. The window openings are set in full height semicircular-headed openings with linked impost bands and rusticated keystones. 2 similar arched openings to each end. In the central pediment a circular opening for a clock. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: built near the site of the medieval Hospital of St John where the earlier workhouse was situated.
